Well seeing as this is my first blog post here at blogger, let me introduce myself. My name is Brian and I am twenty years old and currently enrolled in college... but onto the story!
Earlier this week I was hearing rumbles of a California assemblyman by the name of Tom Ammiano introducing a bill that would LEGALIZE all marijuana for people over the age of 21. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/23/BAO416354C.DTL
I couldn't believe it, maybe change is coming to America, although Obama doesn't believe in it's legalization just yet. Anyway, if you don't know already, California, although with the rest of the states, are in dire need of a source of income to overcome it's state debt. Well Ammiano stepped up to the plate and became the main backer of this bill. Apparently, legalizing weed would give Cali a 1.3 billion dollar income per year!! Yes I wrote that right, 1.3 BILLION, a year!!! There are plently of people who support this bill, like San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey and Betty Yee who works for the Board of Equalization which collects Cali's taxes. Yee and her team performed the research and uncovered the enormous amount of money weed could make.
Before I go on, I want everyone to understand that weed is the LARGEST cash crop in the WORLD!! And it is far less dangerous than cigarettes and alcohol, which are probably the two worst drugs ever introduced to man kind. It's not like marijuana tears families apart like alcohol does. But many people still don't consider them a major problem.
There are plenty of people who oppose this idea becuase of the stigmatizism that weed is a gateway drug and it's use causes numerous health problems for it's user. Wrong, WRONG!! Marijuana doesn't cause lung cancer and there are no scientific tests to date that prove that marijuana is bad for you. In fact it's probably good for you, otherwise we wouldn't be creating medical marijuana to give to cancer patients. In fact, it is currently being used in research for numerous amounts of deadly diseases. Look it up on google and you'll see what I mean.
I was just watching Glenn Beck on his T.V on FNC and he had one of the writers of the bill on his show, sorry I forgot the his name. And right off the bat Beck was spitting out ignorant comments. I can't believe this guy has a T.V show. Beck said that marijuana was terrible for your lungs. Hate to be the bearer of bad news Beck, but it isn't. The man couldn't take the interview seriously, giggling like a little school girl (or a guy that just smoked lol). I feel that all of marijuana's opposers are just people who are ignorant to what the "drug" actually does to you. And I feel like a change is coming to that ideal, but thats a different story.
But nevermind the drug issue, think about what this will do for the state of california. 1.3 billion dollars a year and more becuse of the money they will save on processing those caught with it. When Obama first came to office he said we needed to think outside the box becuase our old ideas are what got us into this mess, and Ammiano is doing exactly that. In this day and age where knowledge about drugs like this are readily available, it is "high time" we take another look at this demonized drug that deserves none of the prosecution it recieves.
Besides, it's just like underage drinking, creating laws aren't going to deter people from using marijunana, if they want to, they simply will.
